In-depth guide

What goes into an Upwork clone built with Fabricate

An Upwork clone is a freelance marketplace that starts from the job: a client posts what they need, freelancers send proposals, and the client hires one. Built with Fabricate, it is one web app made from your description, with a sign-in for clients and freelancers, its own database and an admin page for you.

Jobs and proposals: each job has a description, skills, a budget and a deadline; freelancers search jobs by skill and send a proposal with a price and a note. The client shortlists and hires, the job splits into milestones, and both sides rate each other at the end. Messages appear live.

Money: On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That suits fees to join, such as a monthly plan for freelancers. Holding a client's payment until work is approved and paying the freelancer their share is not built in, so clients pay freelancers directly.

What is not built in: escrow and payouts, delivering files such as PDFs through the app, push notifications and emails about new messages, and phone apps from the App Store or Google Play. Photos can be shown on profiles and jobs, up to your plan's storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do payments work?
On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That money goes to you: paying freelancers their share of each job is not built in, so it suits a platform where freelancers pay you a fee to join, or where clients pay freelancers directly. Fabricate takes no share of what you are paid; Stripe charges its own card fees.
Can freelancers send proposals?
Yes. Freelancers send a proposal on a job with their price and a cover note, and the client sees every proposal on the job, shortlists, declines or hires.
How are disputes handled?
By you. Ask for a way for either side to report a problem with a job, and an admin page where you see the reports and the job's messages. Holding payments in escrow is not built in.
Can freelancers deliver files?
Photos, yes. Documents people upload stay private, for you to open in Fabricate, so delivering files such as PDFs or designs to a client through the app is not built in; freelancers send them by email or a link to a shared drive.
Is there a messaging system?
Yes. Ask for live updates and new messages and posts appear on open screens without a refresh, over a connection to the app's own server. There are no push notifications or emails about new messages.
Is it legal to build an Upwork clone?
Building an app that works in a similar way is common, but do not use Upwork's name, logo, design or content. Fabricate writes your app's code from your description and does not copy Upwork's code. Pick a name of your own, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
