In-depth guide

What goes into an eBay clone built with Fabricate

An eBay clone is a marketplace where each item is its own listing, sold at a fixed price or to the highest bidder. Built with Fabricate, it is one web app made from your description, with a sign-in for buyers and sellers, its own database and an admin page for you.

Listings and bids: sellers add photos, a condition, a category and either a price or a starting bid with an end time. Buyers search, add listings to a watchlist and bid; the highest bid shows on the listing, and when the time runs out the app closes the auction and names the winner.

Money: On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That suits fees from sellers, such as a fee per listing or a featured spot. Collecting the buyer's payment and passing it on to the seller is not built in, so buyers pay sellers directly, or you collect and pay sellers yourself.

What is not built in: paying sellers, carrier rates and shipping labels, emails, texts and push notifications about bids, and phone apps from the App Store or Google Play. Photos can be shown on listings, up to your plan's storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do payments work?
On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That money goes to you: paying sellers their share of each sale is not built in, so it suits a platform where sellers pay you a fee to join, or where buyers pay sellers directly. Fabricate takes no share of what you are paid; Stripe charges its own card fees.
How do auctions end?
Each auction has an end time. When it passes, the app closes the listing and shows the winning bid to the buyer and the seller, who then arrange payment and delivery. You can ask for a reserve price below which the item does not sell.
Will bidders know when they are outbid?
They see it on the listing and in their own list of bids. Ask for live updates and new messages and posts appear on open screens without a refresh, over a connection to the app's own server. Emails, text messages and push notifications about bids are not built in.
Can I charge sellers to list?
On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. Ask for a fee per listing, a monthly seller plan or a featured spot. Fabricate takes no share of what you are paid; Stripe charges its own card fees.
Is it legal to build an eBay clone?
Building an app that works in a similar way is common, but do not use eBay's name, logo, design or content. Fabricate writes your app's code from your description and does not copy eBay's code. Pick a name of your own, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
