In-depth guide

What goes into a Yelp clone built with Fabricate

A Yelp clone is a local review site: a listing for every business, and ratings and reviews from people who have been there. Built with Fabricate, it is one web app made from your description, with a sign-in for reviewers and owners, its own database and an admin page for you.

Listings and reviews: each business has a category, an address, opening hours and photos. Signed-in users rate it from one to five stars and write a review with photos, and the owner, once you approve their claim, replies in public.

Moderation and money: readers flag reviews and you hide or remove them and block accounts. On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That suits featured spots or a monthly plan for businesses.

What is not built in: maps and search by distance, bookings with listed businesses, emails about new reviews, and phone apps from the App Store or Google Play. Photos can be shown on listings and reviews, up to your plan's storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do businesses claim their listing?
Ask for a claim button: the owner signs in and asks to claim the listing, and you approve it from your admin page. They can then update its details and reply to reviews.
How do I stop fake reviews?
Ask for reviews to need a signed-in account, one review per business per account, and a flag button. Flagged reviews go to your admin page, where you hide them or block the account.
Can I make money from it?
On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. Ask for featured spots at the top of a category, or a monthly plan for businesses. Fabricate takes no share of what you are paid; Stripe charges its own card fees.
Can it show a map of results?
No. A map and search by distance are not built in. Each listing shows its address, and people search by area, category and rating.
Can reviewers post photos?
Photos are stored by Fabricate for the app, up to your plan's storage, with a size cap on each photo and a daily upload limit for the whole app. A posted photo is a public file: anyone who has its link can open it.
Is it legal to build a Yelp clone?
Building an app that works in a similar way is common, but do not use Yelp's name, logo, design or content. Fabricate writes your app's code from your description and does not copy Yelp's code. Pick a name of your own, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
