In-depth guide

What goes into an Instacart clone built with Fabricate

An Instacart clone is a grocery ordering app: customers shop by aisle, choose when the order arrives, and staff pick and deliver it. Built with Fabricate, it is one web app made from your description, with a sign-in for customers and staff, its own database and an admin page for you.

Orders: products sit in aisles with prices and units, and each item in the cart says whether it may be swapped. Customers pick a delivery or pickup slot that closes when full. Shoppers see the orders for each slot, tick items off and move the order along, and the customer sees each step.

Money: On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. That suits one grocer, or several shops you run yourself. Taking one payment and splitting it between stores, or paying shoppers per order, is not built in.

What is not built in: live maps and driver tracking, payouts to stores or shoppers, emails, texts and push notifications about orders, and phone apps from the App Store or Google Play. Customers order from any phone or computer browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do payments work?
On Pro and Max, the app can take card payments through Stripe Checkout, paid into your own Stripe account, which you connect under More > Payments. Each order is paid into that account. Fabricate takes no share of what you are paid; Stripe charges its own card fees.
Can it handle several stores?
Each store can have its own aisles and staff sign-in, but card payments reach only your own Stripe account, so taking one payment and paying each store its share is not built in. It suits one shop, or several you run yourself.
How do substitutions work?
Customers choose for each item whether to swap it for something similar or leave it out. The shopper sees that choice while picking and marks what was swapped, and the customer sees it on the order.
Can customers track their delivery?
By status, yes: received, picking, out for delivery and delivered. A live map and the driver's position are not built in.
Will customers get an email when the order is on its way?
They see the status in the app when they open it. Emails, text messages and push notifications about an order are not built in.
Is it legal to build an Instacart clone?
Building an app that works in a similar way is common, but do not use Instacart's name, logo, design or content. Fabricate writes your app's code from your description and does not copy Instacart's code. Pick a name of your own, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
