How Retool counts AI credits and agent hours

Retool's AI credits pay for building apps with its AI app builder and for the queries your apps send to AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. They are pooled: everyone in the organization draws on one monthly allowance, 250 credits on Free, 1,000 on Team, 3,000 on Business and 10,000 on Enterprise. Retool's docs list 750 and 1,500 as Team's and Business's base credits, and its pricing page says the bonus credits on top may change over time. A prompt costs more when it needs more reasoning or a larger output; by Retool's estimate, a prompt uses about 12 credits and an app takes 3 to 6 prompts to build.

Credits renew on the first day of each billing cycle and don't roll over. When the pool runs out, Retool's AI features stop until it renews, unless an admin buys a pack: 1,000 credits for $100 on Team and Business, used after the month's allowance and valid to the end of the next monthly billing cycle, 30 to 60 days after purchase. Free can't buy packs. Only Enterprise can use its own AI provider key, which draws no credits, and building through another AI tool over Retool's MCP server still uses Retool's credits for the building.

Agents, which carry out tasks on their own, are billed apart from AI credits, by the hour they run, at a rate set by the model. Every organization gets $50 of agent time free each month, up to about 20 hours depending on the model. Retool's rate table runs from $1 an hour for gpt-5-nano to $175 for Claude Opus 4, with Claude Sonnet at $61 and Claude Opus 4.5 and 4.6 at $102. On Free, agents stop when the free time is used; on Team and Business the overage is charged each month, even on a yearly plan. Workflows count runs instead: 500 a month on Free and 5,000 on Team and Business, with 5,000 more for $75 a month.

What a team pays

Each team on Retool Team, billed monthly, beside Fabricate's cheapest plan with a seat for each builder. Retool charges for each builder and each internal user; on Fabricate the plan sets the price, and the people who only use an app sign in to the app itself.

What one app costs on Fabricate

Most of a month's credits go on changes, not the first build. Here is an example month on one app, drawn against Pro's 350 credits, and a way to price your own.

One exception: on Pro and Max, when your app uses AI for its visitors, answering them or reading documents they upload, each use is paid from your credits. Serving the app itself never is.

The plan price is the easy part. These four decide what a month really comes to.

  • Running out mid-month

    • RetoolRetool's AI features stop until the next billing cycle unless an admin buys a pack, 1,000 credits for $100, which Free can't. Past the free $50 of agent time, agents on Team and Business keep running and the overage is billed monthly; on Free they stop.

    • FabricateOn Pro and Max, extra credits start at $10 for 100 and never expire, and apps on a paid plan stay online when credits run out.

  • Your own domain

    • RetoolOn Business and Enterprise. On Free and Team, apps publish at an address on Retool's domain, such as yourcompany--app.retool.app.

    • FabricatePro connects up to 5 domains you own and Max up to 20, with the secure padlock set up for you.

  • Traffic to the live app

    • RetoolNot billed as traffic but by the person: each internal user is a seat every month, and on Business, people outside your company are free up to 50, then $10 a month each billed monthly, less in larger numbers or billed yearly.

    • FabricateNot billed. Serving your published app never touches your credits.

  • AI inside your app

    • RetoolAI queries your apps send through Retool draw on the pooled AI credits, and agents bill by the hour, from $1 to $175 an hour depending on the model. On Enterprise, your own provider key draws no credits.

    • FabricateOn Pro and Max, each AI answer your app gives and each document it reads is paid from your credits, and "Where your credits went" lists them for each app.

When Retool is the better buy

Retool is built for tools over the databases and APIs a company already runs: it connects to them, keeps staging apart from production from Team up, and on Business adds audit logs and rich permissions. Fabricate builds an app with its own database, sign-in and roles, and doesn't connect to a database you already run. For a team of 5 or fewer, Retool's Free plan costs nothing. On Fabricate, Free builds and previews, and going live needs Pro.

Retool also builds phone apps for iOS and Android on every plan, where Fabricate builds web apps that work in a phone's browser. On Enterprise, Retool runs inside your own cloud or air-gapped. Where Fabricate costs less is a tool many people use, since its price doesn't grow with the people who sign in to an app. We make Fabricate, so we say this part plainly.

Questions people ask

Retool's answers come from its own pages, read October 26, 2026. Fabricate's come from our live plans.

Is Retool free?
Yes, for up to 5 users. Retool's Free plan costs $0, with 250 AI credits a month, 500 workflow runs and a production environment in Retool's cloud. A sixth person needs Team, at $12 a month for each builder and $7 for each internal user, or $10 and $5 billed yearly.
How much does Retool cost?
Billed monthly, Team costs $12 a month for each builder and $7 for each internal user, and Business $65 and $18; billed yearly, $10 and $5, and $50 and $15. A builder is anyone who built or edited an app or workflow that month, and everyone else enabled is an internal user. Enterprise is priced through sales.
Does Retool charge per user?
Yes. Every enabled person is billed each month as a builder or an internal user, so a team of 5 builders and 45 internal users pays $375 a month on Team, or $1,135 on Business, billed monthly. On Business, people outside your company, such as clients, are free up to 50 and then billed each month too.
Does Retool have a free trial?
Yes. Retool's pricing page offers a free trial of Team and Business, without saying how long it lasts, beside a Free plan at $0 for up to 5 users, with 250 AI credits a month. Students and educators can apply for a free Business account, and nonprofits for 25 free seats.
Can you self-host Retool?
On Enterprise, which is priced through sales. Retool then runs in your own cloud or air-gapped, on up to 6 instances, and Retool says setup takes about 15 minutes with Docker; your team runs and updates the servers. Free, Team and Business run in Retool's cloud.
What are Retool AI credits?
A monthly allowance, pooled across your organization, that pays for building apps with Retool's AI and for the AI queries your apps run: 250 credits on Free, 1,000 on Team, 3,000 on Business and 10,000 on Enterprise. By Retool's estimate a prompt uses about 12 credits. They renew each billing cycle without rolling over, and packs of 1,000 cost $100 on Team and Business.
How are Retool agents priced?
By the hour an agent runs, apart from AI credits, at a rate set by the model: from $1 an hour for gpt-5-nano to $175 for Claude Opus 4, with Claude Sonnet at $61. Every plan includes $50 of agent time a month, up to about 20 hours. Past it, Free stops agents, and Team and Business pay the overage monthly.
Does Retool include a custom domain?
On Business and Enterprise. On Free and Team, apps you publish live at an address on Retool's domain, such as yourcompany--app.retool.app.
How do I work out a Retool bill?
Multiply by the people: on Team, billed monthly, $12 for each builder and $7 for each internal user, so 3 builders and 30 internal users come to $246 a month, or $180 billed yearly. Then add what your use needs: external users past 50 on Business, $10 a month each billed monthly, less in larger numbers; AI credit packs at $100 per 1,000; agent time past the free $50; and $75 a month for each 5,000 workflow runs beyond the plan's.
What happens when Fabricate credits run out?
Nothing is lost: your apps stay in your account, and apps on a paid plan stay online. You can upgrade, or wait until your credits refill next month. On Pro and Max you can also buy extra credits, which never expire: 100 for $10, 300 for $27, 600 for $51, 1,000 for $80, 2,500 for $185, 5,000 for $350 or 10,000 for $650.
Is there a cheaper Retool alternative?
For a tool many people use, it can be, since Retool's price grows with each person. Fabricate, which we make, costs $25 a month on Pro, with room for you and 3 people you invite to build, and the people who use an app sign in to it with no price per person. Retool is the better fit when the tools must read and write databases you already run.
