ComparisonUpdated
Two website builders that host the site, take payments and now draft it with AI. They differ in where you start, Wix on a free plan and Squarespace on a free trial, in what each plan charges on sales, and in how much room each gives a site to grow.
The short answer: pick Wix to start on a free plan, or for tools such as bookings, events and restaurant orders; its paid plans cost $17 to $159 a month, billed yearly. Pick Squarespace to sell from its cheapest plan, with unlimited bandwidth and storage on every plan, from $19 a month billed yearly or $25 monthly, and no store fee from Core. Neither exports a site you can host elsewhere.
Best for: a free start, and business tools such as bookings
Wix is a website builder and domain registrar.
Best for: a designed site that sells, on any plan
Squarespace is a website builder known for its templates, and its AI site builder turns a description of your business into a multi-page starting point you edit in its drag-and-drop editor.
Best for: an app with its own data, not a site
Wix and Squarespace build websites.
Feature by feature, with the tool that does each one better.
Wix is a website builder and domain registrar. Its AI website builder makes a site from a single prompt, which you keep shaping by prompting or by hand in the drag-and-drop editor, or you start from one of over 2,000 templates. Wix hosts every site, and a free site goes online at a wixsite.com address with Wix branding. Paid plans connect your own domain and add storage, collaborators and monthly AI credits, and from Core they take payments and run a store, bookings and customer accounts. Wix's plans also cover events, restaurants, hotels and online courses, and Velo lets developers add their own code. Wix also owns Base44, an AI app builder it runs as a separate product.
Choose it if
Squarespace is a website builder known for its templates, and its AI site builder turns a description of your business into a multi-page starting point you edit in its drag-and-drop editor. Every plan includes hosting, SSL, unlimited bandwidth and storage, and selling products, services and subscriptions, with Squarespace Payments taking cards, Apple Pay, Klarna, Afterpay and ACH in 13 countries. There is no free plan: every site starts with a 14-day free trial, no card needed. Higher plans lower the fees on sales and add CSS and JavaScript, more contributors and more AI credits each month.
Choose it if
Both are website builders that host the site, connect your domain, take payments and now draft a site with AI, so the choice comes down to the plans. Wix starts free, with a site at a wixsite.com address, and its paid plans add storage, collaborators and AI credits as they climb from Light to Business Elite. Squarespace has no free plan, but every plan includes unlimited bandwidth and storage, so a busy site or a large image library doesn't push it up a plan.
Selling is where the plans part most. Every Squarespace plan sells, Basic with a 2% store fee and Core and up with none, and its card rates fall from 2.9% + $0.30 to 2.5% on Advanced. Wix's Light can't take payments at all; from Core it runs a store with up to 50,000 products, bookings, invoices and customer accounts, Business adds automated sales tax, and Pricing Plans sales carry a fee of 4% on Core, 2% on Business and none on Business Elite.
AI is in both, and Wix leans on it more. Its AI website builder makes a site from one prompt, and its plans count AI credits from 150 to 1,000 a month, with AI agents that answer site chats and phone calls up to a monthly limit. Squarespace's AI builder drafts a multi-page starting point, and its credits run from 10, once, on Basic to 120 a month on Advanced.
Neither hands you a site you can host elsewhere. A Wix site runs on Wix's servers, though Velo lets a developer add JavaScript that runs with it, and Squarespace exports some content as a file for WordPress, without its styles or custom CSS. If the site may one day need to be an app with its own data, that is the cost to weigh.
A portfolio or a site for a small studio
Squarespace's Basic, at $19 a month billed yearly, includes unlimited bandwidth and storage for the images. Wix's Light, at $17, holds 2 GB.
Pick Squarespace
Trying it before paying
A free Wix site goes online at a wixsite.com address, with Wix branding. Squarespace gives a 14-day trial with no card, then needs a paid plan.
Pick Wix
A shop selling products
Wix sells from Core, at $29 a month billed yearly, with up to 50,000 products. Squarespace sells from Basic, with a 2% store fee until Core, also $29 billed yearly, and lists unlimited products on every plan.
Either works
A business that takes bookings
Wix includes scheduling and services from Core, and its plans count AI agents that answer site chats and phone calls. Squarespace sells services on every plan.
Pick Wix
A team editing the site together
Squarespace's Core allows unlimited contributors for $29 a month billed yearly. Wix allows 5 collaborators on Core, 10 on Business and 100 on Business Elite.
Pick Squarespace
Wix's pricing page shows yearly prices, paid up front, and Squarespace's shows both, so set them side by side billed yearly: Light at $17 a month against Basic at $19, and Core at $29 on both. The plans buy different things. Wix's Light can't take payments, which start at Core, while every Squarespace plan sells, with a 2% store fee on Basic and none from Core. Squarespace includes unlimited bandwidth and storage on every plan, while Wix caps storage below Business Elite, at $159. Wix has a free plan to start on; Squarespace has a 14-day trial, and paying it monthly costs $6 to $40 a month more than yearly.
We make Fabricate
Wix and Squarespace build websites. If what you need is an app, with its own records, rules and screens that change with the data, Fabricate builds one from a description, with the database and sign-in written into the app's own code. Building and previewing are free; publishing is on Pro and Max.
